Incidents of this nature seem to be on the increase in recent weeks. Japan is no exception to the trend. So, as CNN reports, this month two passengers had to be disembarked for refusing to put on a mask on the plane. An incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, on a Hokkaido Air System Company flight that connected Hakodate to Okushiri Island, in the northern province of Hokkaido. A man who was not wearing a mask was ordered by the captain to get off the plane, according to Matsuhiro Ohta, public relations manager of the company, a subsidiary of Japan Airlines. Because of this refractory passenger, the flight was delayed by half an hour.

To justify his not wearing the mask, the passenger indicated that he was developing a rash from the mask. Matsuhiro Ohta nevertheless claimed that the passenger was unruly and uncooperative and that his refusal to wear a mask was only part of the reasons that prompted the crew to ask him to leave the plane.

A second incident took place on September 7 on a flight of the Peach Aviation company which linked the city of Kushiro in northern Japan to Osaka. The pilot was forced to make an “unscheduled stop” because of a passenger who refused to wear his mask despite repeated requests from the crew. Peach Aviation confirmed to CNN that the flight was forced to land due to the unruly behavior of a passenger and that the company was not ruling out legal action against the individual. The flight finally landed in Osaka 2 hours and 15 minutes late.
