The track of the acquisition of Conforama by its competitor Goal is clarified

As early as last October, the CEO of the But brand had already shown signs of interest in the acquisition of ten Conforama stores “rather located in rural areas and in the Paris region”. The track seems to be confirmed in recent days. If so far the director general of Conforama, Marc Ténart, publicly indicated that the expression of interest of But “does not correspond to the interests of the employees, nor to those of the sector”, he seems to hold a very different discourse internally. In a note sent to Conforama employees and dated May 20, 2020, which Le Parisien was able to obtain, he specifies that if “the EMP is always the option on which we focus”, “the banks forced us to consider other options, including a reconciliation with Goal “.

This change of tone comes at a time when an Interministerial Industrial Restructuring Committee (CIRI) is to be held on Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. with the trade unions of the brand and the Ministry of the Economy. The objective for Bercy is to recall its requirements regarding a possible takeover of Conforama by Aim: maintenance of all jobs, preservation of stores and financing of the job safeguarding plan validated in 2019. This plan notably provided for the elimination of 1,900 of the 9,000 jobs the brand currently has. The takeover by But, with its 7,500 employees and annual growth in turnover of 6.5%, seems to be the track taken by Bercy.

‘a feeling of panic among employees’

For their part, the unions are awaiting “reliable information” from the government at this meeting. “We want to understand the reasons for this bank loan default,” said hooly News Abdelaziz Boucherit, central delegate of the CGT Conforama (first union), for whom a “flagship of French furniture is in danger of disappearing”.

“The company is eligible for the EMP and had started to recover for a few months” before being struck by the crisis linked to the epidemic of Covid-19, he underlines.
