Test of the Audi e-tron, a very high-end electric SUV

Aesthetically, almost nothing seems to distinguish the Audi e-tron from another SUV of the brand. Except for one detail: this model has no mirrors. They are replaced by cameras, the images of which are broadcast on small OLED screens placed in the doors, near the doorknobs. If this technological equipment is likely to impress passengers, it requires some time to adapt to the driver.

Reflex to look at the cameras rather than the screens, lack of depth of the images (forcing you to turn your head to make sure that nobody is in the next row) and reduced visibility in rainy weather: the constraints of these “Virtual mirrors” are numerous, especially since they are not given (1,850 euros optional). And rest assured, there are still enough screens on board to distract you!

There’s a 12.3-inch one, which acts as on-board instrumentation (dubbed Virtual Cockpit by Audi), and two other touchscreen controls for the multimedia system and climate control. The latter are equipped with haptic feedback technology, reproducing sensations of touching the screen and thus improving use. The Audi e-tron convinces us with a serious interior presentation, good build quality and generous interior space, allowing three adults to travel in the rear without problems.

And to drive?

By pressing the “Start Engine” button, a welcome music is heard, then there is silence. The vehicle is however ready to start. This is the magic of the electric car. The motor, or rather the two motors, are housed on each axle. They allow you to have four-wheel drive at all times – and therefore flawless traction – and deliver a maximum power of 408 hp when the “Dynamic” mode is engaged.
