La Poste has just unveiled, Thursday, October 15, the results of its study “For responsible communication”, conducted with the firm Quantis. As part of its commitment to ecological transition, the company wanted to compare the environmental impact of paper communication media with their digital equivalent. And the results of this study are rather eloquent: in many cases, the paper medium is less polluting than its digital counterpart.

Thus, five scenarios were studied by Quantis. The first concerns advertisements for a car brand. In this case, paper (color email sent by post) is more favorable than digital (advertising emailing) for 13 out of 16 environmental indicators, in particular on the depletion of the ozone layer, on the acidification of the oceans and on the fossil resources used.

A second scenario concerns flyers for a restaurant chain. Paper (flyer distributed in letterboxes) is undoubtedly more favorable than digital (advertising video on social networks) on 15 environmental indicators out of 16. The following scenario is concerned with the promotion of a distribution brand. Here again, the paper catalog sent by mail is more favorable to the environment than the use of a mobile application from the sending of an emailing including a promotional video. Regarding the following scenario, the electricity bill, paper is slightly more favorable than digital for nine environmental indicators out of 16, in particular the use of fossil resources, climate change and acidification.

The last scenario studied: the catalog of a furniture brand. There, on the other hand, paper (catalog sent by mail) is no more favorable to the environment than digital (…)
