François Fillon sentenced to firm prison for the fictitious employment of his wife

His ex-substitute Marc Joulaud and Penelope Fillon were also on the defendants’ bench. The wife of the former Prime Minister was thus sentenced to three years suspended prison, 37,000 euros fine and two years of ineligibility. In addition, the couple must reimburse the sums fraudulently collected by Penelope Fillon, or 401,000 euros, according to court estimates. Marc Jouleau will have to reimburse jointly with Penelope Fillon 679,000 euros. He was also sentenced to a three-year suspended prison sentence, a 20,000 euro fine and five years of ineligibility.

The defense’s hopes of a reopening of the trial after statements by the former PNF boss Eliane Houlette about procedural “pressures” from her hierarchy during this sensitive investigation were quickly shattered by the court, which rejected their request for start of hearing.

Defense lawyers immediately announced their intention to appeal. “This decision, which is not fair, will be appealed. There will be a new trial,” said lawyer Antonin Lévy. The latter also denounced the “scandalous conditions” of the trial.

Penelope Fillon’s contracts met ‘no need’

For the court, the contracts of parliamentary assistant to Penelope Fillon with her husband, then Marc Joulaud, between 1998 and 2013, had “no consistency” and did not meet “any need”. François Fillon, who had defended the reality of his wife’s work, has “not questioned”, stressed President Nathalie Gavarino, describing the behavior of the former Prime Minister as “a failure not only to his duty of probity but also that of exemplarity “as a parliamentarian.

The Fillon spouses are also condemned for the fictitious jobs, in 2006 and 2007, of their two elder children Marie and Charles, hired as parliamentary assistants of their father when he was senator.
