At Honda, everyone needs to get their hands dirty during this special time. Workers at the US plant in Marysville, Ohio, have had proof of this. According to information revealed by WOSU Public Media, several people who usually work in offices have received an email to come and work on the production lines, at the factory of the car manufacturer, alongside the workers. First presented on a voluntary basis, this policy has become mandatory, specifies Cnet, to whom an employee confesses “never having seen that” in five years of presence in this Honda factory.

The employees of the purchasing, R&D and accounting departments would have been the most requested to leave their usual position. In the email sent to the employees concerned, which the American media obtained, Honda explains that it is facing a shortage of workers, on leave after contracting the virus or placed in quarantine. The automaker also ensures that the exceptional assistance of $ 600 granted by the government to the unemployed complicates the search for temporary workers. Among the employees, several would complain about the lack of training and the failure to respect the social distancing in force on the production lines within the factory.

“Staff problems”

Honda for its part confirmed this information, but gave another version of the facts in a press release. The manufacturer, who has already claimed to have used this solution which will only be temporary, concedes that he is facing “personnel problems requiring the support of associates who do not generally work in production”. The “strong customer demand for Honda products” and the “need to carefully manage production during the pandemic” are the two explanations put forward by Honda to justify this policy, the duration of which is not specified.
